Calicula: A lot of problems (volumetric lighting flashing really brightly, facial flexes not what they should be) can be fixed by padding the beginning of a shot (I do 2 seconds to be safe, you can probably get away with a lot less, I've never really tried to see how long it needs to be).
Basically, just cut all the samples/keyframes/whatever and paste them a few seconds in. Then after you render just discard those useless frames and it should be fine. You have to render those useless, motionless frames to let the lighting and shit work it self out which is a pain, but it works.

SFM is still in beta and it definitely shows.
