Stefanie Joosten is Dutch, living in Japan. I do not know about Japan, but the Dutch have essentially the same education we have in Germany as far as I know. That means you don't pay a dime at all for your education. Worst case scenario is that you pay back without interest or inflation adjustment.
In my particular case, I've had living expenses (food, rent, ...) paid for by the state. University attendance cost 500€ / 6 month semester, like all normal universities. Due to reaching higher than average scores, my debt was waived entirely. Mind you, the state does not pay for extravagance, so living is covered alright, but if you want to party twice a week, you'll still have to get a job on the side.
If you do have to pay back, it's still pretty cheap obviously since all normal universities don't charge money. They're paid by the government. And since, in the past, there have been people who'd spend half their lives in universities due to laziness, they passed a law that attending one costs 500€ / semester attendance.
Bottom line is even if you do have to pay everything back, after getting a job, it's fairly easy and not particularly burdening in terms of timespan.
